The origin of this cultivar is contested between Wilson and McGann. Wilson claims it originated in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and gained fame in Belmont City, Ohio, but McGann claims Ohio was the place of origin. Wilson also claims it originated Mrs. Beam garden.
