Date of origin contested. Mr. Matthew Hawley moved from Milford, CT to New Canaan, NY and brought seeds from which the Hawley grew. Was known in this region for about 100 years before Gen. E. Levensworth of Syracuse, NY in 1846 took scions from Hawley and Dows and sent specimens of the fruit and an accounts of its origin to the pomologist Mr. Hovey.
