Hughe's Virginia Crab

Date and place of origin contested. Highly valued as a cider fruit because of its high level of acidity. Commonly grown in 18th-century Virginia. It is believed to a corss between a native American crabapple and the domesticated European apple. Thomas Jefferson planted an entire orchard in this variety.
