Newtown Pippin

Also known as
  • Gresham Moore Pippin
  • Newton Greentown Pippin
  • Green Newtown pippin
  • yellow newtown pippin
This variety is recorded as originating on the farm of Gersham Moore. The origination of the tree is contested, some believing it is from the Hudson Valley. Thatcher cites a source locating its origin in Holland, but then also notes that it is from "Newton [sic], Queen's county, Long Island, state of New York." He also notes that it is an excellent apple for cider as well as for the table. It is of a greenish color. Many varieties are raised from the seed, but this cultivar does not grow well in sandy soil. This is the oldest commercially grown native variety in the United States.
