PROJECT STATEMENT
The Story of the iPhone: Interactive Twine aims to emphasize the importance of exploring essential topics of the production and use of the iPhone, and how both human and non-human species are affected. Audience members are encouraged to explore the piece in its entirety, in order to fully conceptualize the anthropomorphic characteristics of the iPhone. In the table reading of the short-film, The Lost Mineral written by Sydney Oshuna, artists from Atlanta, Georgia come together to bring the story of the iPhone to life. Unexpectedly, however, this short film seeks to challenge audiences to question the role of human agency in the evolution of the iPhone, human reliance on technology for survival and the effects of mineral extraction that follows. Following the Table Reading of The Lost Mineral, the cast joins Bard College Biology Department representatives in a discussion about connecting arts to environmental activism. Beginning with a conversation about the importance of recycling technology such as the iPhone, the panelists explore what it means to practice environmental activism during a pandemic and how this translates through art. Other pieces of the twine include a short satire skit investigating the effects of Deep Sea Mining on marine species as well as a short presentation prompting audience members to ponder on the emotional effects that iPhones have on users.
