PROJECT STATEMENT

Using game development platform Unity, “Virtual Kariba” is a 3D model of the Kariba Dam that resides on the Zambezi river. Lake Kariba and its dam are a striking example of how man-made technology can completely disrupt and replace naturally occurring ecosystems. The animation contemplates ideas of past, present, and futurity in a non-linear way that cannot be fully realized using other mediums. This model explores the impact the Kariba Dam has had on interactions between humans, non-human animals, and environments in the ecosystem that surrounds Zimbabwe and Zambia. Using a 3D model representation of the Kariba Dam effectively presents our object in relation to the concept of the class, (Resilience, Survival and Extinction), as a whole. To navigate through the virtual space, use the W A S D keys to walk in all directions, and the spacebar to jump. Your mouse cursor will disappear but you can continue to use the mousepad as a looking tool. Once you encounter an object, click and hold to interact. Some objects are auditory and won’t require clicking, for these objects, be sure to stand in the area long enough to listen to the entirety of the audio. Use the ESC key to retrieve the cursor or to exit the game.
